Halogen bulbs banned from 1st September
From September 1, the European Union banned, in accordance with the relevant EU directive, the production and import of halogen lightbulbs across the EU.
The new measures will not apply to products that are already on the shelves in stores, but only to new products produced in or imported to the EU, and apply to standard halogen bulbs, but exclude those used in desk lamps and floodlights.
The ban on halogen bulbs is part of an EU-wide effort to improve energy efficiency and cut carbon emissions.
LEDs, which will likely replace halogen bulbs, may cost more upfront but consume five times less energy than halogen bulbs.
Phasing out halogen bulbs may save around 93 teraWatts each year (TWh/a), the equivalent to Portugal’s annual electricity consumption.
